How We Speak Matters: Recognizing Stigmatizing Language In Gambling-Related Harm

08/02/20262 minutes

The words we use matter. They can influence whether someone feels supported and understood or judged and stigmatized. When discussing gambling-related harm, person-first language helps put the focus on the individual rather than defining them by a behavior or condition.

For example, instead of using labels such as "problem gambler," "compulsive gambler," or "gambling addict," consider phrases like "person experiencing gambling-related harm" or "person with a gambling disorder." These alternatives recognize that an individual is more than the challenges they may be facing.

Language can also affect whether people seek help. Shame or fear of stigma are significant barriers to reaching out for support one may need. Using respectful, nonjudgmental language can help create an environment where individuals feel more comfortable starting conversations about their gambling behaviors.

Moving toward person-first language is about promoting dignity, respect, and understanding. Small changes in how we speak can help reduce stigma and support a more compassionate conversation around gambling-related harm.

At the Hoosier Lottery, we are committed to fostering positive play and encouraging respectful conversations that help all players feel seen, heard, and supported.

If you ever feel like play isn’t fun anymore, or you’re concerned about yourself or someone else, free, confidential resources are always available 24/7 at 1-800-994-8448, texting “INGAMB” to 53342, or on the Chat Now feature
